| TRAI Again Extends NTO 2.0 Implementation Date for Broadcasters Posted: 03 Jun 2022 07:27 AM PDT
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the NTO (New Tariff Order) 2.0 implementation date for the broadcasters. Earlier, the regulatory body had directed all the broadcasters to implement the NTO 2.0 by June 1, 2022. But, in a new directive, TRAI has extended the last date for implementation of the new tariff order 2.0 to November 30, 2022. In addition to this, TRAI has asked all the DPOs (Distribution Platform Operators) to report to the authority, DRP (Distributor Retail Price) of the pay channels and the bouquets of pay channels along with the composition of bouquets of pay and FTA (Free-to-Air) channels as per the new regulatory framework 2020 by September 30, 2022. Why Has TRAI Pushed the NTO 2.0 Implementation Date AheadThe regulatory body, in a release, said that it learnt from DPOs, the association of Local Cable Operators (LCOs) and consumer organisations about the difficulties that they will face while implementing the NTO 2.0. For the unaware, TRAI released a consultation paper on May 7, 2022, on "Issues Related to New Regulatory Framework for Broadcasting and Cable Services". This consultation paper was rolled out with the purpose of understanding the issues that would arrive with the implementation of the New Regulatory Framework 2020. The NTO 2.0 has faced a lot of scrutiny by the media and broadcasting industry as it could potentially push consumers into OTT (over-the-top) content consumption. With the NTO 2.0, the broadcasters would start pricing their driver channels/popular channels higher and offer them on an al-a-carte basis. Thus, at the end of the day, consumers will have to pay NCF (Network Capacity Fee), bouquet fee, and then fee for al-a-carte channels. This would shoot the bill amount up for the consumers which would then make OTT seem like a better option. This is not a good thing for the broadcasters. Even if they are able to charge more, they will lose business in the medium-to-long term. Since OTT users are already growing in the country, the NTO 2.0 would be detrimental to the business of the Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators and cable TV operators. It will be interesting to see whether TRAI, under a new chief, PD Vaghela, can stop the implementation of NTO 2.0 or bring another solution for it. |
| Google Pay Has Found a Way to Make Indians Very Happy With Hinglish Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:08 AM PDT
In November 2021, Google announced that it would roll out support for Hinglish (a blend of Hindi and English) language to its line-up of apps, starting with Google Pay in India. Well, the move has been finally executed by the search-engine giant. Hinglish language is a blend of Hindi and English. Here, English letters are used to write Hindi words. Google Pay, the most popular payments app, now supports a variety of languages, including Hinglish, English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telegu, which are widely used across the country. This is done only to make the app users friendly. In order to change your app language to Hinglish, users must first update the Google Pay app to the latest version. Next, tap on your profile picture in the top right corner of the app and open the settings. Now, go to "Personal Details" and change the language. Google Pay is One of the Top Payments Apps in IndiaGoogle Pay has become one of the most popular, trusted, and top online payments application in the country. Users can simply download the Google Pay app on their smartphones (both iOS and Android) and register their bank account with a UPI ID inside the app. Post that, users can send money to any active UPI ID through the app. Further, there are facilities such as mobile recharges, utility bill payments and more that users can be done with the Google Pay app. |
| Story of the Week: Samsung Galaxy S22 Series Becomes the First in the World to Do this Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:09 AM PDT
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is one of the finest smartphones in the globe right now. The device was at the top of the list when it came to market share for smartphones priced above Rs 1,00,000. Now, in another development, the Samsung Galaxy series has become the first 5G smartphone series to support voice over 5G (Vo5G). While 5G networks have arrived in multiple nations already, Vo5G has still not become a common thing. Telcos across the globe don't even offer 5G voice calls yet, but only 5G data. The Samsung Galaxy S22 series includes Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The support for Vo5G is now available in these devices and is expected to reach other devices in the near future. Benefits of 5G Voice CallingWell, there are a ton of benefits of 5G voice calling. The quality of video and speech improves significantly over the 4G. Then there is of course 5G data speeds which are the most superior when it comes to mobile network technology. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has been the top choice for consumers looking for smartphones in the ultra-premium category. Over 74% of the shipments of ultra-premium devices in April 2022 were of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This is a solid blow to Apple's iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max which also fall in the same price segment. It is also worth noting that the Galaxy S22 Ultra has been shipping with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 chips in India and not the Exynos chips. This is definitely one of the reasons which have driven Indians to invest their money into the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Further, Galaxy Note lovers also didn't have any other option than to go for the Galaxy S22 Ultra as Samsung has discontinued the Note line and will offer S Pen support with the Ultra models in the 'S' series. |
| Vi VPN Extended Connect Is Here to Help With Secure Connectivity Posted: 03 Jun 2022 03:00 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, offers VPN (Virtual Private Network) services through its B2B arm called Vi Business. Every enterprise that's going digital today requires access to cloud services for storing data and accessing it conveniently through any location with internet connectivity. The concept of private networks has also become common as businesses rely on these networks for security by connecting them to the data centers, offices, branches and more. But private networks can still be compromised. Note that the cloud service providers also have their data centers with which the enterprise's private network might be connected to access data. Thus, in such scenarios, having a highly secure network is necessary for accessing files and processing communication. Vodafone Idea (Vi) offers a 'Vi VPN Extended Connect' service to enterprises with which the businesses/organisations can access cloud-hosted applications in a very secure manner. What is Vi VPN Extended Connect? It is basically a VPN service from Vi's business arm, which will give your enterprise secure access to business applications hosted on the cloud provider's data centres. The telco said that this "is achieved using our scalable and high-speed MPLS VPN connectivity via a robust network." Enterprises can connect to Microsoft Azure, AWS, and Google Data Centers over highly redundant, dual MPLS VPN connections. Enterprises should choose Vi VPN Extended Connect because of three reasons – a) the solution/product helps in preventing security breaches while accessing online cloud applications; b) enterprises can easily run VRF, Quality of Services (QoS), and traffic prioritisation features on the internet, and c) enterprises can accelerate cloud adoption through a corporate MPLS network that extends to the cloud. The solution will keep the data of the enterprises completely secure, and it is powered by a 24 x 7 Network Operations Center that monitors and maintains the health of the network. |
| iPadOS 16 to Deliver Mac Like Experience Posted: 03 Jun 2022 01:49 AM PDT
Macs are known for delivering a very easy customer journey. But then there are iPads which were conceptualised to replace laptops. While that hasn't happened till now, every year, there are major advancements in the tablets industry which suggests that we aren't too far from a reality where iPads will be replacing laptops. iPads, for now, are mostly geared towards phone like experience on a larger screen. But with the iPadOS 16, Apple is reportedly trying to change that. iPadOS 16 Will Bring Major Upgrades to User ExperienceAs per Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the iPadOS 16 will come with the convenience of seeing opened apps and switching easily between the tasks, resizing app windows, and allowing users to manage multiple apps at the same time. The iPadOS 16 is expected to be unveiled during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event starting on June 6, 2022. The leak from Gurman suggests that it will bring a redesigned multitasking interface. There are already multiple iPads now which are powered by the M1 chipset, which also powers multiple Macs. Users can also connect their iPads with a mouse and a keyboard to get an experience similar to Macs. But there are still a lot of apps that can't be run on an iPad. But the rumours suggest that Apple is planning to change that pretty soon. The M1 powered iPads are already powerful enough; they need just to be retouched on the OS (operating system) side of things to become ready for running heavy applications such as Logic Pro, xCode, and Final Cut Pro. iPads powered by the silicon chipsets can potentially be converted into Macs with the M1 chipset inside of them. Apple just needs to figure out a way to do that. The Cupertino tech giant had already filed a patent for a removable keyboard with a hinge to place the iPad and convert it into a Mac. We will find out more once the WWDC event kicks off on June 6, 2022. |

Further, the document reveals that Oppo is allowing OnePlus to market an Oppo device under its brand. The Oppo device that OnePlus is taking carries the model number CPH2387. For the unaware, the model number CPH2387 is for the Oppo A57 which recently launched in Thailand and is also making its way to India. The OnePlus phone that is going to be the rebranded Oppo A57 is most likely to be a Nord smartphone and fall in the affordable category. Other details have not been revealed. But it is safe to assume that the OnePlus device won't be the exact copy of the Oppo device. OnePlus would definitely tweak the smartphone enough to make it look like its own. Further, there's the OxygenOS which gives a different feel than that of the ColorOS on Oppo smartphones. But on the hardware side of things, the OnePlus device might feature the exact same specifications as the Oppo A57. Since the device has been launched in Thailand already, we can know what to expect in terms of display, processor, camera, and battery. This particular OnePlus smartphone in the making could be the most affordable device ever launched by the company. |
| BSNL Wants Rs 61,000 Crore Worth of Spectrum in Various Frequency Bands for 4G and 5G Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:30 PM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) wants the government to allot it spectrum worth Rs 61,000 crore in several frequency bands. The state-run telco is seeking airwaves in the 700 MHz band and mid-band for both 4G and 5G. BSNL is yet to launch 4G or 5G in the country. As per a PTI report, The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had decided to reserve 10 MHz of paired spectrum (means the same quantity for uplink and downlink) in the 600 MHz band; 40 MHz in the 3600-3670 MHz band, and 400 MHz in 24 GHz band. The telecom department had also sought views from TRAI on this. BSNL Wants Something Else ThoughMuch recently, BSNL CMD PK Purwar wrote a letter to the government asking to reserve 70 MHz of airwaves in the mid-band (3300-3670 MHz) for BSNL. The state-run telco had also sought 10 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band because there's no existing device ecosystem for the airwaves in the 600 MHz band. Looking at the base price recommended by the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), the spectrum sought by BSNL will come at the cost of Rs 39,000 crore. Further, the airwaves in the mid-band would cost the state-run telco around Rs 22,190 crore. the airwaves in the 700 MHz frequency band are considered premium because they can offer a very wide range for connectivity and would require a much smaller number of towers. But for 5G, delivering speeds would be important; thus, the mid-band frequencies are important. Even if the government decides to allocate 70 MHz of airwaves to BSNL in the mid-band, each private telco will still be able to get at least 100 MHz of frequencies in the 3300-3670 MHz band, which is sufficient for them. BSNL will be able to access the reserved spectrum once it wants to start providing 4G and 5G services. |

| India Working Towards Indigenous 5G Open-RAN Development, C-DoT Leading the Way Posted: 02 Jun 2022 07:35 AM PDT
Developing indigenous networking solutions has been a key focus for the Modi government. Now, India has taken yet another big step in developing an indigenous 5G ecosystem in the country. The C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) has announced a strategic partnership with VVDN Technologies Private Limited and WiSig Networks Private Limited for developing 5G Open-RAN (O-RAN) and other products together. Collaboration Between C-DoT, VVDN Technologies and WiSig to Benefit IndiaEach of these companies and organisations has technical strength and expertise in multiple areas when it comes to developing networking products. This partnership will leverage Indian R&D in evolving a mutually productive alliance leading to indigenous development, design, manufacturing and deployment of cost-effective 5G solutions and products. In a statement, C-DoT said that this engagement will create new avenues for wider adoption and monetisation of home-grown 5G products and solutions. BSNL Will Benefit From the Partnership as WellIt is worth noting that C-DoT is the R&D arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The body has been working with BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) with respect to developing and testing the 4G network. C-DoT Executive Director, Rajkumar Upadhyay had earlier said that they have also been working on 5G for a long-time silently and will help BSNL in rolling out 5G NSA (non-standalone) in 2023. The indigenous development and deployment of solutions will benefit India in the long run as it helps in boosting the economy, levels up the R&D ecosystem in the country, and places India amongst the likes of other nations which have large and notable telecom vendors. Further, indigenous networking solutions also help India in becoming self-sufficient, which is the ultimate goal of the Modi government. BSNL will be the first telecom operator which will roll out homegrown 4G networks at a wide scale in the country. The state-run telco is expected to do a small scale 4G launch in August 2022. |
| Airtel, Jio, and Vi Should Get 5G Spectrum for 30 Years at Reduced Prices: Niti Aayog Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:10 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are working on developing more and more use cases around their 5G networks in a testing environment. The telcos are leveraging the 5G spectrum given by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). But, the telecom operators can't roll out 5G without first going through the spectrum auction and acquiring airwaves meant for 5G commercial services. Niti Aayog, the think tank of the government, has suggested that the telcos should be given 5G spectrum for 30 years instead of 20 years. But the key thing to note in Niti Aayog's suggestion is that the body wants the government to give the spectrum for 30 years at the price of 20 years. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had suggested different pricing for 20 years and 30 years. Jio, Airtel, and Vi weren't too happy about the pricing recommendations. Now, according to a Financial Express report, Niti Aayog has suggested that keeping the price the same as suggested for 20 years, the government should give the 5G airwaves to the telcos for 30 years. This recommendation from the body must make the telcos quite happy. It is worth noting that Amitabh Kant, CEO of Niti Aayog, is also a member of the Digital Communications Commission (DCC), the highest inter-ministerial decision-making body for the telecom sector. DCC Had Backed Pricing Recommendations of TRAIDCC had backed the pricing recommendations for the spectrum that TRAI suggested. The recommendations have been put forward by DoT to the Cabinet, which will take the final call for key decisions revolving around 5G. This recommendation from Niti Aayog could be a problem solver for the telecom sector. It will also ensure that money flows in for the government, and the telcos can also at least get the airwaves for a longer duration. As mentioned, the final decision will be taken by the Cabinet, which shouldn't take long now. |

| Bharti Airtel 5G Capex to be More as Capex in Q4 FY22 Was Lesser than Expected Posted: 02 Jun 2022 12:48 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator, is expected to go big with 5G-led capex in the coming quarters. The telco has freer cash flow because of lesser than expected capex during Q4 FY22, said Bernstein. According to Bernstein, Airtel will again lead with hiking tariffs in the second of 2022 as it did in 2021. The brokerage firm has revised the target price of Airtel from Rs 900 to Rs 915. With the tariff hikes later this year, Bernstein said that Airtel's medium-term target of Rs 200 ARPU (average revenue per user) would be achieved. The research firm has said that Bharti Airtel's ARPU will grow at an annualised rate of 12% over FY23-25. This growth will be led by an increase in 4G subscribers and higher tariffs. Indian Telecom Industry is Faring Well Despite Global Market TurmoilBernstein said that India's telecom industry has been resilient despite the inflation and rising rates at a time when other sectors have had to face adverse effects. The reason cited for this by the brokerage firm was reasonable valuations and an improving outlook. The telcos are expected to add more 4G users in the coming quarters, and the ARPU for the entire sector will also grow after another tariff hike later this year. Further, with the relief measures announced by the Indian government, liquidity came back into the sector. Vodafone Idea (Vi), which was expected to go bankrupt, is now making long-term plans with 5G rollout in the near future because of the relief measures. The Indian government is taking equity in Vi against the interest-related dues the telco had. Factors such as increasing data consumption, higher consumer-spends for mobile services and more have placed India's telecom sector in a good place for the investors to find a long-term gain opportunity. These are the contributing reasons why the telecom sector in India hasn't succumbed to the market pressure created by the war between Russia and Ukraine. |
| Apple’s Safari Becomes Second After Google Chrome to Have Billion Users Posted: 01 Jun 2022 11:34 PM PDT
Safari, an Apple-owned internet browser, has become the second in the world to have more than a billion users. This feat has been already achieved by Google Chrome quite a while back. As per the Atlas VPN team – 1,006,232,879 internet users (19.16% of all internet users) now use the Safari browser. Google Chrome is still the number one on the list, with over 3,378,967,819 users (more than 3.3 billion users). The statistics are based on the GlobalStats browser market share percentage. Apple developed Safari comes pre-installed on Macs, iPhones, and iPads. Safari Offers Several Privacy Features
Apple has ensured that Safari stands out in the market with its privacy features. Users can access the Safari browser's report, which shows how many and which cross-site trackers Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) stopped from accessing personal information. Despite the 1 billion figure that Safari has been able to achieve, it still stands more than 2.3 billion users behind Google Chrome. Chrome has been an attractive option for users because of the web applications it offers users. In addition to this, Google keeps updating Chrome to ensure that it is running on the latest security protocols. But in a surprising development, Microsoft Edge was able to go ahead of Mozilla's Firefox in April 2022. Samsung Internet and Opera were also on the list of most used browsers in the world. How You Can Browse SafelyEven with these great browsers at your disposal, you should never leave things to chance. | iOS 16 to Bring Many Enhanced Features for iPhones Posted: 01 Jun 2022 09:51 PM PDT
Apple's World-Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022 is not far from here (scheduled for June 6, 2022). It is the event which unveils the new software and products that Apple has been working on for the entire year. Every year at the WWDC event, Apple announces a new version of iOS. This time, it will be iOS 16. This new version of iOS is expected to hit the market with the iPhone 14 series. Post that, every other eligible iPhone will get the update. Let's take a look at what can be expected with this year's iOS version. iOS 16 Expected FeaturesFirst of all, we can expect to see an all-new notifications panel with the iOS 16. The handling of notifications with the iOS 15 is not that great. But with the iOS 16, it is expected to change for good. Second, Apple is expected to bring widget wallpapers for the lock screen of the iPhones. There's no understanding of what these wallpapers would look like. But if it is true, we will get to know it anyway. The most exciting feature of the iOS 16 could be the AOD (Always-on-Display) feature. It would eat up significant battery, but it would be interesting to see how the iPhone does it. Further, Apple could introduce a new, heavily upgraded Health app and a Messages app. There could be some social media like features on the Messages app of Apple, said Mark Gurman. There could be a lot newer things on the iOS 16. More will be known once Apple makes the announcement of the new operating system officially. There's no saying which iPhone will receive the OS update or not. Apple is known for extending support to older generation iPhones as well. But there could be some hardware deficiencies with respect to very old devices such as the iPhone 6 Plus and so on, and thus the new OS might not work for these devices properly. |
