Samsung A Series Smartphones Help With Keeping Market Share Lead in Q2 2022

Posted: 19 Jul 2022 06:47 AM PDT

Samsung

According to a report by market research company Canalys, worldwide smartphone shipments decreased by 9% in Q2 2022. With the supply of its A series handsets, Samsung won the competition with a 21 percent market share. With a 17 percent market share with the iPhone 13 continuing to be in strong demand, Apple finished in second. Chinese companies Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, experienced market share reductions of 10%, 9%, and 14%, respectively. The company claimed that regional unrest and economic headwinds should be blamed for the declining demand.

Smartphone shipments for the second quarter of the year decreased by 9% on an annual basis, according to a report by Canalys. Samsung, as previously indicated, earned first place with a market share of 21%, up from 18% in Q1 2021, thanks to a stronger supply of its budget A series phones. Apple moved up to second position with a 17% market share, up from 14% a year ago, because of the continued popularity of the iPhone 13, which also saw high demand.

Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi Continue to Struggle in China

According to the study, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi are still having difficulties in China. Oppo’s market share decreased from 11% to 10%, while Vivo’s share decreased from 10% to 9%, and Xiaomi’s market share decreased from 17% to 14%.

Vendors have recently reviewed their portfolio strategy for the remainder of 2022 as a result of economic headwinds, poor demand, and inventory build-up. As consumers with limited budgets shift their device purchases toward the lower end, the oversupplied mid-range is an exposed market for companies to concentrate on modifying fresh launches, according to data from Canalys Research Analyst Runar Bjrhovde.

To refresh your memory, the shipping of smartphones “Made in India” increased by 7% YoY in Q1 2022, according to recent research by Counterpoint. According to the report, there were over 48 million smartphones shipped worldwide.

Nothing Phone 1 Disappoints Some Users Because of Hardware Issues

Posted: 19 Jul 2022 05:45 AM PDT

Nothing Phone 1

The Nothing Phone 1, the brand’s first Android smartphone, was recently released. The phone has recently been one of the most discussed smartphones, but it surely has its fair share of issues. Customers who placed pre-orders for the smartphone on Flipkart have started receiving them, and some of them have already started to complain about a number of issues with the product. Some Nothing Phone 1 devices appear to be having a number of hardware-level problems.

A green tint issue is, well, “Nothing” new for firms releasing handsets with AMOLED panels. The list of smartphones that have previously suffered the same fate has been expanded to include the Nothing Phone 1. As the name suggests, the green tint issue causes the device’s display to malfunction because the dark areas of the screen start to seem green. This green tint issue has also been seen with flagship-level smartphones, which come with AMOLED display.

Nothing Customers Are Noticing Hardware Issues Possibly Because of Lower Production Quality Control

One Flipkart client who bought a Nothing Phone 1 had to return it in the hopes of getting a working one. However, the substitute phone had the same problems. These are blatant indications of subpar quality control throughout the production procedure.

Numerous users have also been experiencing problems with malfunctioning selfie cameras in addition to the green tint issue. Notably, many Nothing Phone 1 devices now have a selfie camera with a punch-hole that appears to be considerably extended.

Even while the Nothing team has already acknowledged the issues and the affected customers will probably receive a new item, it is somewhat upsetting to see such issues with a brand’s pilot smartphone. The business has not yet released formal guidelines on what customers should do if their Nothing Phone 1 is experiencing problems of this nature. We can only hope that these issues won’t exist in the subsequent batch of Nothing Phones 1 that leaves the production facility.

Deutsche Telekom

Deutsche Telekom, a major German telecom operator, has expanded its 5G network to 123 new locations recently. In total, the company has been able to reach over 855 new locations in the last seven weeks with its mobile services, which include both LTE and 5G. In the LTE department, Deutsche Telekom expanded its LTE networks to 194 new locations purely while additional capacities were provided in over 538 locations in the country.

Deutsche Telekom Using Mid-Band Spectrum for 5G

Deutsche Telekom said that it is currently using 3.6 GHz band spectrum for offering 5G services in more than 2000 locations of Germany. If you are in Germany, here are some of the cities where you can get 5G network services (via 3.6 GHz band spectrum) from Deutsche Telekom – Dortmund, Darmstadt, Bremen, Bonn, Berlin, Augsburg, Aachen, Braunschweig, Dusseldorf, Essen, Duisburg, Frankfurt/Main, Jena, Hanover, Hamburg, Cologne, Kiel, Ludwigsburg, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Munich, Schwerin, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart, and Wolfsburg.

According to a claim made by Deutsche Telekom, over 92% of the households can already access the carrier’s 5G network, while over 99% of the German population can get LTE coverage.

Walter Goldenits, managing director of Technology at Telekom Deutschland said the company is adding more than 1500 new locations every year where it provides mobile network services, especially on railway lines and motorways.

Goldenits said that by 2025, Deutsche Telekom would cover 99% of the German population with its 5G networks. To enable access to the 5G network in rural areas where network coverage is often an issue, Deutsche Telekom is utilising spectrum in the 700 MHz band.

There are 3000+ antennas in the country at about 1,100 locations where Deutsche Telekom is offering 5G services using 700 MHz spectrum. With the help of lower frequencies, consumers living in Germany can get better indoor coverage as well as coverage on highways and more. The telco has been offering 5G services to consumers since July 2019.

TRAI Data

As per the data shared by TRAI, Jio added a total of 3,111,417 or 3.11 million new users, while Airtel added 1,027,881 or 1.02 million new users. Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telco in India, also saw its subscriber base going down by 759,258 (0.75 million) users. It has been a long-time since Vi's user base grew. The telco has been able to add new 4G subscribers, but its overall subscriber base has been shrinking pretty fast.

In the month of April 2022, Airtel had over 352.68 million active users, which grew to become 354.86 million in May 2022, meaning a growth of 2.18 million active users. The active subscriber percentage for Airtel stands at 97.98% in May 2022 compared to 97.65% in the previous month.

STL Bags Rs 250 Crore Deal from Indian Telco

Posted: 19 Jul 2022 01:29 AM PDT

STL

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL), a leading integrator of digital networks, has just announced that it has bagged Rs 250 crore multi-year deal from a leading Indian telecom operator. It is worth noting that the name of the telecom operator has not been disclosed by the company. The partnership is to help the telco with setting up the optical network. This is not the first time that STL will work with this telecom operator.

STL has strengthened its partnership with the concerned telco by partnering with it again. It is worth noting that in 2020, Airtel had picked STL for helping with fiberisation in 10 circles of India. This multi-year deal could be with Airtel only. But since STL hasn't confirmed the name of the company, let's not jump to conclusions.

Under this Rs 250 crore multi-year deal, STL will help the Indian telecom operator by providing specialised optical fibre and deployment services in 9 telecom circles of the country.

Dense Fiberisation is Required in India for 5G

The Indian telcos need to move fast with expanding the fibre to all parts of the country. This partnership between STL and the Indian telecom operator would definitely help India with getting fibre to more corners.

The need for data is going to grow with 5G. India will require denser network infrastructure and backend support.

Praveen Cherian, CEO of STL Global Services, said STL and the concerned telco have been partners for a long-time in the optical connectivity space.

It sure does sound like he is talking about Bharti Airtel.

"In this project, STL will collaborate with the service provider to develop and build a competent network for India. Through our solution, we will provide a 5G-ready and high-capacity network which is expected to enable the service provider to provide faster delivery of new services with enhanced user experience in East, South and North regions."

In its latest report, it can be seen that India hasn't performed well in the median mobile speeds department as it has slipped three ranks from the 115th position in May 2022 to the 118th position in June 2022. Regardless, India's performance in the fixed-broadband witnessed an improvement and helped India climb three ranks in the list of countries offering the fastest median speeds with fixed broadband.

Ookla Speed Data for India in June 2022

According to Ookla, in June 2022, India recorded 14.00 Mbps median mobile download speeds, which are slightly lower than the 14.28 Mbps recorded in May 2022. TRAI in-house Study Centre to Keep India Up to Mark with Innovative and New Tech

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 09:36 PM PDT

TRAI

To support proactive research activities into emerging and developing technologies that are anticipated to further disrupt the telecommunications and broadcasting industries, the Indian telecom regulatory authority (TRAI) has established an internal study centre.

A senior TRAI official told ET Telecom that the regulatory body has formed a study centre which will indulge in pro-active research in new and forthcoming sectors. The official added that the scope would also include fact analysis and the regular release of whitepapers. In the beginning, internal human resources would be employed by the new regulatory division as research associates.

Digital Inclusion to be a Key Focus

Digital inclusion will be a focal point for the new study centre inside TRAI. The official told the publication that this would be an independent division which aims to come out with some forward-looking papers.

Anil Kumar Bharadwaj, a consultant for broadcasting and cable services, has been appointed by the industry regulator to serve as the centre of study and research, or CoSR, the unit’s director general.

Syed Tauseef Abbas has also been promoted by TRAI to the principal advisor for cable and broadcast services (B&CS).

The new centre would make it easier for the watchdog to acquire information and might also result in time savings when making recommendations on issues relating to the two sectors that were referred by the centre.

Due to its regulatory responsibilities, TRAI has been doing ongoing research on various topics related to the twin sectors and constantly monitoring best practices around the world.

Despite the fact that TRAI has been publishing study findings under its many functional divisions, the new initiative would further consolidate research tasks. A whitepaper on smart cities and an analytical report on wireless data are a couple of its earlier projects. This initiative is definitely going to help India in realising its goal of a digital economy pretty fast. In complete essence, it is a step in the right direction.

You can activate the voice assistant, manage playback, and adjust the volume all from the headset, thanks to an in-line remote. Although there is no active noise cancellation, the in-canal fit of the earphones provides some passive noise isolation.

Sony WI-C100 Price and Availability

The Sony WI-C100 is one of the most cost-effective wireless headphones from the Japanese electronics company in India. Its MRP is Rs 2,790 in India; however, it is now on sale for Rs 1,699 during this period. The Sony WI-C100 has stiff competition in the inexpensive market at this price from Indian manufacturers like Boat, Boult Audio, and Noise as well as from international brands with an online focus like Xiaomi, Realme, and OnePlus. Jio

If you are a Reliance Jio customer, you have got some pretty affordable prepaid plans compared to what you will get with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Reliance Jio has a knack for launching new prepaid offerings for its customers. In early 2022, Reliance Jio launched a new prepaid plan for consumers. With this plan, users get plenty of data, and it could be a perfect option for users looking for a long-term plan. So which plan are we talking about? Take a look here.

Reliance Jio Prepaid Plan from 2022 Made for Long-Term Users

The prepaid plan that we are talking about comes for Rs 2,999. This plan was added to the arsenal of Reliance Jio in January 2022, and it is made for long-term users. It comes with a total validity of 365 days and offers users 2.5GB of daily data. There is also unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day bundled for the consumers.

The total amount of data offered to the consumers with this plan is 912.5GB. There are additional benefits offered as well. Users will get a free Disney+ Hotstar Mobile subscription from Jio, which is worth Rs 499 per year. In addition to this, Jio users will also get JioTV, JioCinema, JioSecurity and JioCloud access. All of the additional benefits are offered to the consumers without any extra charges.

Post the consumption of the Fair-Usage-Policy (FUP) data; the internet speed reduces to 64 Kbps. The Rs 2999 plan is not the only long-term prepaid plan with Disney+ Hotstar announced by Jio in 2022. You can also go for the Rs 4199 prepaid plan, which comes with 365 days of service validity and offers Disney+ Hotstar Premium benefits to the consumers. The data offered with the Rs 4199 prepaid plan is 3GB per day. But it is Rs 1,200 more expensive than the Rs 2999 prepaid plan. Do you think the Rs 2,999 prepaid plan from Jio is a good buy?

Oppo Reno8 India Launch Event Disrupted as YouTube Takes the Channel Down

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 06:19 AM PDT

Oppo

Oppo, one of the largest smartphone and consumer electronics manufacturers, is live streaming (at the time of writing) the Oppo Reno8 launch event through multiple mediums, including Facebook, Twitter and more. But YouTube is the platform where most people get to see the launch event live. For some reason, YouTube has pulled down the channel of Oppo India's YouTube channel, and because of that, the live stream was stopped. This is a huge blow to the company's plans to launch the smartphone in the country.

Oppo

While most of the Reno8 series details are already out as it has launched, this is still a big disruption. YouTube said that "This account has been terminated for violating YouTube's Community Guidelines."

Vodafone Idea Continues to Provide Best Voice Calling Experience to Users in June 2022

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 05:45 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, continues to deliver the best voice calling experience to users in 2022. The data comes through the Trai MyCall portal. As per the data, in the month of June 2022, Vodafone Idea outscored Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) in the area of providing the best calling experience.

In June 2022, Bharti Airtel provided the worst voice call quality experience. On a scale of 5 points, Vi scored 4.7, Reliance Jio scored 2.9, BSNL scored 2.8, and Bharti Airtel scored 2.0. Seeing Airtel behind the voice call quality experience delivered by BSNL is quite a shock.

For the entire quarter, Vi has remained the top telecom operator in India when it came to delivering the best voice calling experience to the users.

TRAI MyCall Data

Reliance Jio Customers Most Active in Giving Feedback

As per the MyCall data, out of the total customer feedback, 63.1% of feedback came from Reliance Jio customers, 25% of feedback came from Vodafone Idea customers, and 7.1% of feedback came from BSNL, and 4.8% feedback came from Airtel.

In the customer feedback data as well, Airtel is at the bottom. The numbers aren't indicating the reasons. Vodafone Idea users are getting a better indoor calling experience than any other telco's customers. This is an interesting figure and one that raises a lot of questions around why Airtel and Jio customers aren't even getting voice call experience even close to what Vi customers are getting.

In the speed department as well, during the same month, as per TRAI MySpeed data, Vodafone Idea delivered the best average upload speeds to the consumers in June 2022. In fact, it has been the same thing for the last several months. Vi is definitely doing a lot of work to improve the customer experience in several parts of India, and the telco's customer addition rates in multiple circles have been more than its competitors.

5G Spectrum Auction: Adani Group Submits Rs 100 Crore EMD, See What Airtel, Jio, Vi Have Done

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 03:35 AM PDT

Adani Group, which was highly anticipated to drive the spectrum costs up, might not do that after all. In the 5G spectrum auction, there might be limited bidding from the Adani Group. A recent DoT (Department of Telecommunications) notification said that the Adani Group had submitted an earnest money deposit (EMD) of Rs 100 crore only.

At the same time, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio have submitted an EMD of Rs 5500 crore, Rs 2200 crore and Rs 14,000 crore. All the interested parties paid Rs 1,00,000 as the application fee for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction.

The bidders can bid in any band in any LSA (Licensed Service Area), subject to EPs/EMD/Spectrum cap. Reliance Jio is likely going to bid for spectrum in the range of Rs 70,000 crore (estimate based on previous spectrum auction).

See What Telcos Submitted as EMD in 2021 Spectrum Auction

In 2021, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vi had submitted an EMD of Rs 10,000 crore, Rs 3,000 crore, and Rs 475 crore, respectively.

Post the 2021 spectrum auction, Jio emerged as the biggest bidder with Rs 57,122.65 crore for 488.35 MHz of spectrum in several bands. Airtel spent Rs 18,698.75 crore for 355.45 MHz of airwaves, while Vodafone Idea only spent a mere Rs 1,993.40 crore.

In 2022, the participation of the Adani Group in the spectrum auction is likely going to be in a very muted manner. It looks like the company isn't very keen on spending money on 5G airwaves right now as it might not bring the desired return on investment any time soon.

Adani Group might be counting on the fact that the future spectrum auction might bring airwaves at a lower cost, and since Adani doesn't need to offer consumer 5G services, it isn't too desperate to outbid other players for airwaves.

Reliance Jio and Vi Top Again in Download and Upload Speed Performance in June 2022

Jio Vi

Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi), two prominent telcos in India, have retained their position in delivering the best download and upload speeds to the consumers. India has a total of four telecom operators – Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). For the last five months, according to the data from the TRAI MySpeed portal, Jio has been delivering the best download speeds to the consumers, while Vodafone Idea has been offering the best upload speeds.

Note that the data shared here is an average of the internet speed collected from various consumers of TSPs on a crowdsourcing basis.

Average Download Speeds Delivered by Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL in June 2022

As per TRAI MySpeed data, the average download speed offered by Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL in June 2022 was 22.1 Mbps, 14.4 Mbps, 16.4 Mbps and 5.5 Mbps. In BSNL's case, a lack of 4G networks has hurt the consumer experience.

In the average upload speed department, Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL offered 7.2 Mbps, 5.8 Mbps, 7.8 Mbps, and 4.3 Mbps.

Jio delivered the best download speeds but was also close to Vi in delivering strong upload speeds. Vi's networks have always been good at providing better upload speeds than the 4G networks of other operators (TRAI MySpeed data).

Month-over-month (MoM), the average upload speed that BSNL users were getting in May 2022 reduced significantly in June 2022. In May 2022, the average upload speed delivered by BSNL was around 5 Mbps, but in the following month, it dipped to 4.3 Mbps.

One thing that you must remember here is that this data might not represent the true scenario in the Indian market. The data is the result of users testing their internet speed from the MySpeed app from TRAI. Other platforms such as Ookla and Opensignal also release speed data for the consumers, which is different from what TRAI data suggests.

Xiaomi to Take Big Step in the Direction of EVs in August 2022

Xiaomi

In November 2021, it was stated that Xiaomi might introduce its first electric vehicle (EV) in 2024. Now, a rumour from Sina Tech (via) claims that Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun will introduce the company’s first car prototype in the following month (August).

According to the report, Jun spends nearly two-thirds of his time at the Xiaomi Auto headquarters keeping an eye on the development of the company’s first vehicle. The business will carry out a number of tests following its launch in August, including its first winter test. The first Xiaomi automobile is expected to be mass-produced by the business in 2024.

HVST Automobile Design will be in charge of creating the first electric vehicle prototype for Xiaomi. For those who don’t know, it was the same firm that created the Maven concept car for WM Motor. The report also mentions the company’s plans to recruit a PR director, which suggests that a marketing campaign could be launched in the near future.

The corporation formally announced its intention to enter the electric vehicle market in March 2021. It declared that it would make an initial investment of $1.5 billion, followed by a further $10 billion over the following ten years. It formally registered Xiaomi Auto Co., Ltd. in September 2021.

In November 2021, it inked an agreement with the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area Management Committee to construct the Xiaomi Auto headquarters and its R&D division in Yizhuang. The plant, which has a workforce of more than 1,000, can supposedly produce 300,000 automobiles annually.

Apparently, Xiaomi plans to introduce A+ and B class vehicles. The former will cost between 150,000 and 200,000 Yuan (about $22,230 and $29,640) and have L2 autonomous driving support. The latter, however, will support Level 3 autonomous driving and may cost between 200,000 and 300,000 Yuan (about $29,640 and 44,460).

MacBook Pro New 14-inch and 16-inch Models with M2 Chips to Launch Soon

MacBook Pro 14-inch

According to reports, Apple intends to replace the current M1 chipsets in its 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops. The next Mac notebooks may go on sale this fall, says renowned Apple expert and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, though the precise date is yet unknown. Recall that in October of last year, Apple unveiled the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M1 Pro and M1 Max processors.

Gurman did not mention anything about the future MacBook Pro(s) in his most recent Power On email, but according to 9to5Mac, he did answer a fan’s question concerning the laptops. According to reports, the future MacBook Pro 14 and 16-inch would concentrate on the “graphics side, exactly like with the regular M2,” the processor that drives the most recent MacBook Air (2022) and 13-inch MacBook Pro (2022).

Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch and 14-inch Models

The journalist has already brought up Apple’s intention to release more Macs this year. Apple may release an M2-powered Mac mini, an M2 Pro-powered Mac mini, and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M2 Pro and M2 Max processors this year, according to his last newsletter.

We may anticipate Apple will play it safe when it comes to design and refrain from making significant modifications. This was demonstrated on the 13-inch MacBook Pro this year, which is strikingly comparable to the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020. The 14-inch and 16-inch models, however, underwent a significant makeover, and Apple added the recognisable notch from the iPhone to the two notebooks. The model for this year is anticipated to have the same design aesthetic.

Gurman had also stated that Apple’s M3 chipset is already in development and that the company may introduce a new iMac (J433), a 13-inch MacBook Air (code-named J513), and a 15-inch MacBook Air (J515) early in the next year, most likely in March.

In addition, four new iPhones should be released in September or October. This year, Apple also unveiled the iPhone SE (2022). Readers should be aware that Apple has not yet publicly confirmed these features.
