| The Basics of Spectrum You Need to Know to Understand Spectrum Auction 2022 Posted: 22 Jul 2022 07:24 AM PDT
Spectrum Auction 2022, an auction that enables India to launch 5G, is hardly a few days away. While consumer usage of 5G is a different story that we may discuss later, the entire focus now is on the spectrum auction. For those not from a technical background and who wish to understand the basics of the spectrum in the context, this story can be of some help as we tried to explain the same in layman’s terms. What is Spectrum?Spectrum refers to the invisible radio frequencies that wireless signals travel over. These signals enable us to make calls, send SMS, browse web pages, listen to music, watch videos, and do everything with connectivity on our mobile devices. The unit for frequency is the hertz (Hz), 1 MHz = 10,00,000 Hz. Differing wavelengths and frequencies mean that the signals have different properties and can be used in different ways. For example, some travel a shorter distance but carry more data, and some travel a farther distance but don’t have much capacity. The spectrum is divided into a number of frequency bands, each possessing characteristics peculiar to it which determine the usage appropriate to that band. The numbering and naming conventions set by International Standard Organizations help us to easily identify and refer to different types of frequencies. Spectrum to be Auctioned in IndiaRights to use spectrum at specified frequencies in the 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands for a period of twenty years are being offered in this Auction. The spectrum which is auctioned is sold as 'Paired' – FDD (Frequency Division Duplexing) and 'Unpaired’ (Time Division Duplexing) – TDD. You can refer to the list of bands used for telecom services in India in the ‘Frequency Bands’ tab of the Spectrum sheet. FDD Bands: 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz TDD Bands: 2300 MHz 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands The Lane VisualisationSimply put, you can imagine ‘paired’ as a two-way lane, where in one lane uplink happens and downlink in the other, and ‘unpaired’ as a single lane where both uplink and downlink happen using the same lane. Assume the block of spectrum put to auction to the width of the lane for capacity. Block SizeSpectrum is auctioned in blocks, whose sizes are as below. The minimum bidding quantity varies with new and existing entrants and spectrum availability. A minimum of 5 MHz Block is required to offer 4G services in the bands wherever feasible. India has also experienced 4G on a 3 MHz Lean LTE carrier with peak downlink speeds of around 12 Mbps on 1800 MHz Band. Block Size for Bands: 0.2 MHz: 900 MHz, 1800 MHz Block Multiples5 Blocks of 0.2 MHz = 1 MHz The spectrum being auctioned is liberalised in nature, and there are no restrictions on the technology (GSM/WCDMA/LTE/CDMA/IMT-2020 (5G technology) to be deployed for providing services. In short, telcos can offer CDMA/2G/3G/4G/5G using the spectrum purchased through the auction. Understanding Paired Spectrum Block:Let's understand paired spectrum by taking the 700 MHz band as an example.
Band: 700 MHz (Uplink: 718-748 MHz) (Downlink: 773-803 MHz) For example, if a telco 'A' wins one block (second block to refer), i.e., 5 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band, it will mean that the telco is assigned 723-728 MHz (5 MHz) in uplink frequency paired with 778-783 MHz (5 MHz) in downlink frequency. Thus, the telco would be able to use the 5 MHz for uplink and 5 MHz for downlink purposes, 10 MHz in total. Hence, it is called a paired spectrum due to this configuration where a block of spectrum in a lower frequency band and an associated block of spectrum in an upper-frequency band are used together. In the FDD band, the spectrum is divided into the uplink channel and downlink channel by dividing the frequency. In technical terms, Frequency Division Duplexing is a technique where the transmitter/uplink and receiver/downlink operate at different carrier frequencies. Understanding Unpaired Spectrum Block in India: Let's understand the unpaired spectrum by taking the 2300 MHz band as an example.
Band: 2300 MHz (Frequency for commercial TSP: 2300-2380 MHz) Total Frequency: 80 MHz Type: Unpaired Spectrum, TDD (Time Division Duplexing) To understand this, let us say if telco 'B' wins one block of spectrum in the 2300 band (10 MHz) in the Andhra Pradesh circle. It would mean that the telco is assigned 2360-2370 MHz = 10 MHz unpaired spectrum. The telco can use this 10 MHz spectrum for both uplink and downlink purposes. Hence it is called unpaired spectrum and Time Division Duplexing (TDD). FDD/TDD:After observing the above band configurations with examples, the definitions of FDD/TDD are likely to be easier for you to understand. TDD is implemented on an unpaired spectrum, implying the usage of only one frequency for both downlink and uplink transmissions. TDD is suitable for asymmetric transmission needs. Band – Then and Now Transition 800 MHz Band – CDMA/EVDO > LTE Services by Jio Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS):Using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, telcos can seamlessly operate 5G and 4G concurrently within the same spectrum block. DSS enables service providers to dynamically share spectrum across different technologies. Let’s say telco ‘A’ is offering 4G services using 20 MHz; the same spectrum can be dynamically used to offer 5G services. Although DSS is not related to Spectrum Auction, knowing this will help you understand the technology transition and spectrum utilisation. So, spectrum configuration gives us an idea about the frequency, band plan, block size and basically an address and specification to identify the characteristics of the spectrum block being auctioned from an imaginary spectrum pool. For detailed information on spectrum holdings, please refer to the excel sheet. |

| Airtel to Add Several Billion Dollars through Digital Services in Coming Years: Mittal Posted: 22 Jul 2022 02:15 AM PDT
Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal, the chairman of Bharti Enterprises, recently said that Airtel would be at the forefront of bringing 5G to India. The spectrum auction for 5G airwaves is just around the corner, and the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) is already holding mock auctions for the same on Friday and Saturday. Bharti Airtel has announced its 27th Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for August 12, 2022, at 11 AM. Ahead of the AGM, Sunil Bharti Mittal said that in the next few years, Airtel will add several billion dollars to its revenues through digital services while maintaining an asset-light approach, reports PTI. The Indian government will be offering spectrum worth Rs 4.3 lakh crore in the upcoming auction. A total of 72 GHz of spectrum will be up for grabs by the telcos, and the auction is scheduled to begin on July 26. Airtel Says Mobile Network Completely 5G ReadyMany a time, Airtel and its officials have said that the company's networks are completely 5G ready. The telco has been able to prove a ton of use-cases over its 5G network with the help of the trial spectrum provided by the DoT. Whether Airtel will be the first operator to launch 5G in India is something that remains to be seen. All the private telcos have prepared for the 5G rollout and must have their own unique strategies to win over the market through the next-generation connectivity technology. For now, the eyes of the telecom enthusiasts and the industry would remain on the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. Adani Group would be participating as well. But there's no threat of a heavy bidding fight between the private companies for spectrum. Only Airtel and Jio are going to bid heavily, and since there's plenty of spectrum, both companies should get plenty of it at the base price itself. During the AGM, Airtel will also seek the approval of the shareholders for paying out dividends. |

Out of 100, Tamil Nadu scored 43.8 in the video experience category, while Andhra Pradesh was just behind with a score of 43.7. It is worth noting that Andhra Pradesh was rated as the telecom circle delivering the fastest mobile downloading speeds in India. The national average for video experience was 40.6 In the Games experience, Mumbai scored the best with 70.6 points out of 100 while Delhi was at the second position with 66.1 points. The national average in this category was 60.3. In the voice experience, Delhi was at the top with 79.2 points out of a hundred and Mumbai at the second position with 78.9 points. The national average in this category was 77.6. Here, all the telecom circles performing well are either Category-A or Metro circles. This just proves that the Category-B and Category-C circles need more attention from the telcos and the government. To make India a truly digital nation, the quality of service (QoS) delivered to the customers should be high, and Category-B and Category-C circles should also compete with the higher tier circles in delivering faster download and upload speeds along with strong games, video, and voice experience. Take a look at the image above to understand how different telecom circles performed during the data collection period. |
| Jio, Airtel and Adani Group Can Build a Win-Win Situation for Everyone Posted: 21 Jul 2022 06:37 PM PDT
There is a lot of competition expected to build in the market once the Adani Group goes all in for providing telecom services in India. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio's revenue market share might go down significantly. But that's not going to happen anytime soon. If the Adani Group wants, it can build a win-win situation for everyone. The Indian government had allowed the telecom companies to share active infrastructure with each other in 2021. This was done to help the telcos in reducing costs and time taken to launch new services in the market. One way to ensure that Jio and Airtel keep making money from the presence of the Adani Group is that they make a deal to share infrastructure with the Adani Group. This way, the Adani Group doesn't need to push in huge sums of money to build infrastructure and wait years for ROI (return on investment) and Airtel and Jio keep earning money even if they lose on some clients or subscribers. The cost of developing telecom infrastructure is one of the biggest challenges/hurdles for any telecom company. Especially in a scattered market such as India, where people live in the remotest corners and require network connectivity. Jio and Airtel have already invested thousands of crores in building that infrastructure. The Adani Group can just come and leverage that to make money. Airtel or Jio Might Not Share Infra in the First PlaceBut there's one more thing. Jio and Airtel might not want to share the telecom infra in the first place. They might be a little reluctant on account of helping out the competition in stealing their subscriber market share, which they built by bleeding money. Adani Group is not foraying into the consumer telecom space for now. Thus, there's no threat to the telcos in that area. Even in the enterprise segment, the Adani Group is going with a very passive strategy and would bid for a very limited spectrum. The Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) submitted by the Adani Group is just Rs 100 crore, which is nothing major, to be honest. This means that the group might invest up to Rs 1,100 crore or less in the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. This has led to many analysts believing that it would be a very silent spectrum auction this time around. Do you think the existing telcos will play it cool with the Adani Group and share infra? Do you think it would be the right strategy in the first place? Let us know in the comments below. |

| Best Mobile Download and Upload Speeds are Offered in AP and Rajasthan in India: Opensignal Posted: 21 Jul 2022 06:03 AM PDT
India is one of the most diverse markets. In the telecom market, there are over a billion active wireless subscribers present in the country. The Indian government has divided the country into 22 telecom circles which are then further divided as metro, Category A, Category B, and Category C, depending on the kind of revenue potential they hold for the companies. Opensignal has just released its latest report focusing on the Indian telecom market. The analytics firm measured the performance of the mobile networks in each of the 22 circles and has shared which circles offer the best download and upload speed to the consumers. Take a look at the data ahead. Best Mobile Download and Upload Speed Circles in India
From the image above, you can see that the best download speed experience delivered to Indian consumers is in the circle of Andhra Pradesh (Category-A). As per Opensignal, the best download speed of 15.2 Mbps was noted in Andhra Pradesh. Right behind Andhra Pradesh was Karnataka (Category-A), which delivered a download speed of 14.9 Mbps. Look at the image to see what the other circles could provide in the download segment. In the upload segment, the Rajasthan circle (Category-B) was at the top with 4.9 Mbps speed. At the second position was Gujarat (Category-A) circle with 4.7 Mbps. Opensignal hasn't specified the telecom companies which were able to deliver the best speeds in each of these circles, but the circles have been focused on. The mobile speeds in the Category B and Category C circles are mostly severely lagging behind the Category A circles. The national average download speed was 13.1 Mbps, and the upload speed was 4.4 Mbps. Opensignal said that the data collection period was March 1, 2022, to May 29, 2022. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have been included in the top five ranks in both the upload and download speed segment, which is something for these circles to be proud of. |
| Netflix Executives Shed Some Light on Ad-Supported Plan Posted: 21 Jul 2022 05:28 AM PDT
According to Netflix, it is renegotiating agreements to place advertisements on its platform and will start by doing so in nations with more developed ad markets. The excitement is tempered by the less favourable outcomes, according to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, even though they only lost one million subscribers as opposed to two million. Streaming is already catching up everywhere. The crowd is growing. Hastings is really bullish on streaming because he believes that linear TV will probably die out over the next five to ten years. Greg Peters, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer, stated that Netflix would gradually expand its ad monetisation plans to more countries as the company sees a decent response. But from a brand and advertiser perspective, Peters said the initial response they are getting is quite strong. Initially, this ad will be modest in comparison to the rest of the revenue mix, but over time, it will grow to be sizeable, said peters. Netflix has collaborated with Satya Nadella-run Microsoft for its new ad-supported subscription plan, which the firm hopes to debut in early 2023. Netflix has been hit by a declining user base. Netflix’s chief financial officer, Spence Neumann, stated that ideas like paid sharing and advertising had been discussed as possible strategies to increase membership and better monetise viewing. The company thinks that it can accomplish this in a way that both increases revenue and profits. “As we put out a paid sharing solution, which has a relatively small incremental cost, once we find one that works, it will likely have an impact more quickly”, said Neumann. A new method of password sharing is being trialled by Netflix in Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, according to a recent announcement. |
