| Bharti Airtel and Vi Wi-Fi Joint Venture Might be Sold to Cisco Posted: 06 Jul 2022 09:50 PM PDT
Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) had started a Wi-Fi joint venture called FireFly Networks. The purpose of the JV was to offload mobile networks and promote the use of Wi-Fi in multiple parts of the company. But the business didn't do much as the expansion of 4G networks happened pretty fast in the country once Jio arrived. Now, an ET Telecom report suggests that Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are thinking of selling the Wi-Fi JV to Cisco. The enterprise value of the business is estimated at Rs 200 crore, and the companies are at advanced stage talks. Cisco to Retain ManagementThe report suggests that Cisco will retain the current management of the company with Raj Sethia as the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the company. Sethia is a former Vodafone executive. The Wi-Fi JV has been scouting for investors for the last two to three years. Neither Airtel nor Vodafone Idea wanted to invest fresh funds into their Wi-Fi JV. This is simply because of how fast 4G has arrived in every part of the country. There were no big incentives for either of the telcos to boost the company with fresh investments. FireFly focuses on providing services to the B2B market. Bodies such as the Airports Authority of India (AAI), GMR, Supreme Court of India, Fortis and DLF Cyber are some of the partners of the company. FireFly Wi-Fi points are installed in over 40 cities in 25 states at 650 venues with 10,000 access points. The need for Wi-Fi hotspots is still there, but not at a big intensity. The company claims that it serves over 2.5 million users every day, including 6,00,000 users in 29 different airports in India. Cisco can ideally take up the company from Airtel and Vodafone Idea and expand the operations of FireFly to more parts of India. Further, this will help Cisco with its private network business in the country. |
| Bharti Airtel Might be Just Rs 16 Shy from Hitting Rs 200 ARPU Target Posted: 06 Jul 2022 08:13 PM PDT
Bharti Airtel has been pretty vocal about what it has wanted for a long-time. The telco is all about keeping the highest paying customers in India on its network. This helps Airtel in keeping its ARPU level at the top position amongst the competition. Airtel has said many times that its short-term ARPU goal is Rs 200. ICICI Securities recently said that Airtel's ARPU is expected to reach Rs 184 in Q1 FY23. If this is what the actual data also signifies, then Airtel will only be Rs 16 shy of its short-term ARPU goal of Rs 200. Airtel Will Definitely Cross Rs 200 ARPU Level Very SoonThe telecom operators in India are planning on going for another round of tariff hikes. Airtel has already said that it won't shy away from being the first operator to raise prices again. This will definitely help Airtel in crossing its short-term ARPU target of Rs 200. In the long run, Airtel's ARPU target is Rs 300. At the current tariff levels, it will be too hard to do that. Bharti Airtel needs to add more 4G customers. Right now, the telco also has legacy network users on its network. These users basically don't need to purchase heavily loaded 4G plans. Thus, the number one thing that Airtel needs to do is focus on pushing the legacy network users on its network to 4G services. This will further mean that these new 4G consumers will spend more money on the services of Airtel and help with boosting the ARPU of the company. But one thing is for sure; the Rs 200 ARPU target level is pretty achievable for Airtel in the short term. Just one more tariff hike would propel the company's ARPU into 200+ levels which is what the telco wants. Vi is also likely to follow Airtel in increasing tariffs of prepaid plans, but the move will definitely benefit Airtel more. |
| Vodafone Idea Rs 699 Postpaid Plan Offers Unparalleled Benefits Posted: 06 Jul 2022 06:36 PM PDT
Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio all offer postpaid plans to their consumers. There's no doubt that Vodafone Idea (Vi) is the king when it comes to offering the most heavily loaded postpaid plans to consumers. The Rs 699 postpaid plan from Vi is just unmatchable by Airtel and Jio. Vodafone Idea offers truly unlimited data with this pack. There's no need to worry about getting higher bills because of excess data usage if you are using the Rs 699 postpaid plan from the telco. While there are REDX plans as well, which are way better than what Jio and Airtel offer to their customers, those are ultra-premium plans. The Rs 699 plan, compared to the REDX plans is much more affordable. Why is the Rs 699 Postpaid Plan from Vi One of the Best?It is not just the fact that you get truly unlimited data with this postpaid plan, but there are other benefits as well. You will get a free subscription to Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar, Vi Movies & TV, and Hungama Music free for six months on the Vi app and ZEE5 Premium. Purchasing a subscription to all of these OTT platforms would have cost users a lot more money. Users also get unlimited voice calling with this plan. The only major downside is that this postpaid plan from Vi comes with 100 SMS/month. Honestly, this is a strange thing. If Vi can offer 100 SMS/day to prepaid consumers, why doesn't the telco do the same for postpaid consumers? None of the other operators, including Jio and Airtel, offer their customers such a postpaid plan. Even the most expensive plans from Vi's competitors don't come with truly unlimited data. Vi customers should definitely take advantage of this amazing postpaid plan while they can. The telco has also been improving its mobile network in multiple states/circles and has reported adding the most subscribers in markets such as Delhi in March and April 2022. There are other plans from Vi which offer truly unlimited data. But all of those plans come under the category of REDX. Thus, this is the only normal postpaid plan under Rs 1000 through which users can get truly unlimited data. If you live in an area where Vi's mobile networks are pretty good, you can definitely go for this plan and experience its benefits. |
| Apple to Bring a Major Change in Future iPhones with iPhone 14 Posted: 06 Jul 2022 08:07 AM PDT
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 14 series in September 2022. This will be the first time that Apple will launch a new flagship iPhone series with an old generation chip. The iPhone 14 series is expected to feature two models, including the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max with the A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 series. Its Pro models, including the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, will come with the A16 Bionic chips. According to the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will continue to do this with all the future iPhone series. So, with the iPhone 15 series, you can expect the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Max to be powered by the A16 Bionic (which featured first on the iPhone 14 series) and the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature the A17 Bionic chipsets. Not that users would have a big complaint with that, as iPhones' chips are pretty fast and can be used in flagships for multiple years. This could also be to control costs for Apple as the chipset prices have gone up severely. It will also push iPhone lovers to spend more and go for the Pro models if they want to have the latest tech in their hands. iPhone 14 Series to Change a Lot of ThingsThe cost of the iPhones is also going to go up by $100, at least for the base models, compared to the price that the iPhone 13 launched with. There's no saying where iPhone 14 Max will sit. It might be around $150 or $100 more than the vanilla iPhone 14. This year, Apple is also going to change a lot of things inside the iPhone with the iPhone iOS 16. Apple is also reportedly going to use an enhanced front camera sensor on the iPhone 14 series, and the Pro models will come without the notch that has irritated many consumers. |
| 5G Readiness Rank of Smartphones Launched in June 2022 in India Posted: 06 Jul 2022 07:44 AM PDT
The analysis is based on the 5G smartphones launched in June 2022. The Score is calculated among the 5G smartphones launched in June 2022 and scored from 100. Motorola Moto G82 5G, launched in June 2022, has scored 100 and ranked 1 in the 5G readiness ranking analysis. The Moto G82 5G got the advantage because of covering the maximum number of 5G NR Mid Band (1-6 GHz) as well as covers the maximum number of Low Band (<1 GHz) than the other 5G smartphones launched in the month of June; apart from that, it also covers some other bands such as one PCS and S-band. Motorola used Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 in this smartphone, which comes with two variants, 6GB/128GB and 8GB/128GB, and the price point is between Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000. Poco F4 5G took 2nd spot. It covers one less 5G NR Low Band (<1 GHz) and two less 5G NR Mid Band (1-6GHz) than Moto G82 5G, and because of these numbers, it secured an 87 score. It also covers other bands but only one S-band. Poco F4 5G equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 comes in three variants, 6GB/128GB, 8GB/128GB, and 12GB/256GB, and the price point is between Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000. Oppo K10 5G scored 74 and took 3rd spot in the 5G readiness ranking analysis. It covers the same 5G NR Low Band (<1 GHz) as Poco F4 5G, but in 5G NR Mid Band (1-6 GHz), Oppo 10 5G covers half the number of Mid Band available in Moto G82 5G. It covers no other bands. It is equipped with MediaTek Dimensity 810, a sole variant of 8GB/128GB, and the device is below the Rs 20,000 price point. |
| Railways RoW Portal Integrated With GatiShakti Portal, to Ensure Better Connectivity Posted: 06 Jul 2022 06:27 AM PDT
Indian Railways RoW (right of way) portal has been integrated with the GatiShakti portal for the telecom sector. The announcement was made by the Department of Telecommunications. This move will ensure that connectivity improves for people travelling with Indian Railways in the future. Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) applauded the move and thanked the Ministry of Railways, National Broadband Mission, and DoT for the integration. The body said, "This will be helpful to provide better connectivity around Railways across India." For the unaware, the GatiShakti Sanchar Portal was announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) a short while back. This portal is made to ensure that RoW applications can be submitted online and approvals are also fast-tracked. More importantly, the portal brings transparency into play and holds officials accountable for the fast decisions on the applications. Govt Trying to Onboard Different States and UTs into the PortalA total of 30 different states and union territories have been onboarded on the portal. With the integration of the RoW portal of Indian Railways with the GatiShakti portal, faster development of the digital infrastructure can be created for Railways across India. The government is trying to get every state and UT onboarded on the portal so that India's journey to a digital nation can be achieved faster. The telcos and infrastructure providers (IPs) will benefit a lot from the presence of the portal. One of the biggest pains for the telecom industry so far was the slow clearance of RoW applications. But this portal will greatly contribute to the alleviation of the pain and help the telcos in boosting revenues by reaching out to more parts of the country and deploying fiber and other infrastructure to offer services. Some of the states are yet to become a part of the portal, and the government is trying to make that happen as fast as possible as it is for the greater good of India. |
| Flagship Smartphones Need to Cool Down Posted: 06 Jul 2022 05:44 AM PDT
Most of the flagship smartphones, along with mid-range devices, are overheating today. If a consumer is spending hard-earned money on an ultra-premium device, he/she wouldn't want it to overheat fast and ruin the experience. iPhones are generally better than Androids in the heat department. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 was one of the biggest contributors to flagship Android smartphones overheating in 2022. The chipset's elder brother, Snapdragon 8+ Gen1, which is now shipping with flagship devices such as ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro, has dialled down the heating a little and made the chip more efficient. Because of the Snapdragon 8 Gen1, smartphone companies had to install bigger and much better cooling systems for their devices. However, it still wasn't enough. The best Android flagships in 2022 end up overheating. It is not just the Qualcomm chips but also the MediaTek chipsets. OnePlus Nord 2 running on MediaTek Dimensity 1200 heats pretty fast. Now, of course, at the end of the day, the faster the processor is and the more load it is handling, the more it will generate heat. But this is the thing, companies don't need to design chips which are just faster than the previous-gen, but they need to design chips which are sufficiently fast and are also efficient and don't heat the device much. In the coming months and years, smartphone manufacturers must look to deliver a cool experience to the users. The better the cooling system, the more users, would desire a device. Especially in humid conditions such as India, overheated devices tend to irritate customers a lot. iPhone 13 Pro Max One of the Best Smartphones in the Staying Cool DepartmentAn iPhone expert and handler for years now told TelecomTalk that one of the biggest advantages that the iPhone 13 Pro Max has over the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and other flagship Android devices is that it doesn't heat as much and as fast. A fast smartphone which overheats is not a good experience at all. Things such as high-res video recording overheat Snapdragon 8 Gen1 chip smartphones pretty fast. The same is with many other Android devices as well. |
| DoT Announces New Rule for International Calls Posted: 06 Jul 2022 03:51 AM PDT
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has come up with a new rule for the international calls that Indian consumers receive. The telecom department has amended the clause in the unified license for TSPs (telecom service providers), which says that ILDOs (International Long-Distance Operators) need to stop any international call without or with improper caller line identification (CLI) from reaching the end customer. This move will up the security of Indian consumers who can potentially be scammed by international callers with no proper caller line identification (CLI). The telcos must stop such calls at the server level so that it never reaches the customer. The rule will come into effect from August 1, 2022. To identify an improper CLI, DoT has asked to refer to ITU-T recommendations on E.164 numbering scheme. What happened until now? Rules of the Existing ClauseAs per the existing clause, if there was any case of a foreign call to India with an improper CLI, then the ILD operator was allowed to assign a two-digit carrier identification code followed by the country code from where the call was being made. For example, any time you would have received an international call, there must have been an international country code on display. The amended clause was announced by the DoT on July 6, 2022, on its website, and as mentioned above, it will come into effect from August 8, 2022. So, the concerned TSPs have some time to implement this rule in their system. It will definitely contribute to making the mobile calling experience a safer one for Indian consumers at large. The DoT and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) look after the rights of the consumers and ensure that they are not cheated in any manner ever. The telcos should ideally not face any problems with this move, and it should be implemented pretty smoothly. |
| BSNL Hikes Price of Data Voucher and Reduces Benefits of Two More Plans Posted: 06 Jul 2022 02:56 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has hiked the price of the Rs 1498 data voucher. It is a direct hike which BSNL said will be applicable from July 1, 2022. The same voucher will now cost users Rs 1515. The benefits will be the same – 2GB of daily data with speed reduced to 40 Kbps after. The validity of this plan is 365 days. While it is not a big jump, it is worth noting that BSNL has been reducing the benefits of its multiple prepaid plans. TelecomTalk earlier reported about the reduction in benefits (indirect tariff hike) of the Rs 99, Rs 118 and Rs 319 plans. But, BSNL has also reduced the benefits of Rs 999 and Rs 1499 plans. Let's take a look at the old and new benefits. BSNL Rs 999 Plan Old vs New BenefitsThe Rs 999 plan from BSNL used to come with a validity of 240 days earlier, but from July 1, 2022, the plan's validity has been reduced to 200 days. So, the cost of using the plan has gone up from Rs 4.16 to Rs 4.99. That is quite a difference. Users get unlimited voice calling with this plan for 200 days and free PRBT for 2 months. There are no SMS or data benefits bundled with this plan. BSNL Rs 1499 Plan Old vs New BenefitsThe Rs 1499 plan from BSNL comes with unlimited voice calling + 100 SMS/day + 24GB data. This has not changed. But the validity of the plan has been reduced to 336 days from 365 days earlier. This means, the daily cost of the plan has jumped from Rs 4.10 to Rs 4.46, which is not much big of a difference. By reducing the validity of these plans, BSNL has indirectly increased the cost of its services for the consumers. The state-run telco has been making many changes to its offering over the last few days and all of it is happening before the 4G launch in India. |

| Vodafone Idea, Airtel and Jio to See Slower Mobile Revenue Growth in Q1 FY23 Posted: 05 Jul 2022 11:57 PM PDT
The private telecom operators in India including Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Bharti Airtel aren't going to see robust growth in mobile revenues in Q1 FY23. This is due to a couple of reasons, said ICICI Securities in a note. First of all, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) saw a decline in subscribers. The smartphone prices were up and thus the sales were lower resulting in fewer 4G subscribers net addition. Therefore, the benefit of premiumisation of services won't be there. ICICI Securities said that telcos will see negligible benefit from the tariff hike implemented during December 2021, except for Jio which has many long-term subscribers. ARPU to Rise Because of One Extra Day in the QuarterThe average revenue per user (ARPU) figure will rise because of the one extra day that was there in the quarter. As per the analyst, the mobile revenue growth for Airtel is expected at 1.6% QoQ as for VIL it is only 0.6% and for Jio it is 3.3%. According to the report, Reliance Jio will report the highest growth in ARPU, up by 4% to Rs 174. Airtel's ARPU is expected to reach Rs 184 with a growth of 3.1% and VIL's ARPU is expected to rise by 2% to Rs 126. 4G net additions for Airtel were three million while for VIL was one million during the quarter. Airtel India's revenues are expected to grow by 1.6% QoQ (21.6% YoY) to Rs 231 billion led by the mobile segment which is up by 1.6% QoQ and 25.1% YoY. India EBITDA (earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortisation), as well as Africa EBITDA, is expected to rise but the consolidated EBITDA to dip by 1% QoQ (+22.4% YoY). Net profit for Airtel is seen at Rs 19 billion. ICICI Securities said that Jio Platform's EBITDA is expected to rise 3.3% QoQ to Rs 113 billion and net profit to rise 6.4% QoQ to Rs 46 billion. As for VIL, the EBITDA is expected to dip 3.4% QoQ to Rs 45 billion and the net loss is seen at Rs 66 billion (there are no tax rebates). |

| Vivo Expected to Launch New 5G Device Soon Posted: 05 Jul 2022 09:16 PM PDT
Vivo, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, is soon expected to launch a new affordable 5G smartphone. Reportedly, this device will be placed under the Y series portfolio. The smartphone in concern is the Vivo Y30 5G. The smartphone's launch is expected soon because of its listing on NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) in Thailand. There's already a Vivo Y30 smartphone available in the market, but it is the standard edition and was launched back in December 2020. This one will be the 5G variant. Let's take a look at all that has been revealed because of the listing. Vivo Y30 5G Revealed SpecificationsThe Vivo Y30 5G has been listed on NBTC with the model number V2160. According to a MySmartPrice report, the listing confirms that the device will support GSM/WCDMA/LTE/NR networks. Since this is the first time this device has been spotted on any of the certification platforms, there is no other confirmed detail for the smartphone. However, it should be an upgraded version of the Vivo Y30. Let's recall the specifications of the Vivo Y30 Standard Edition. Vivo Y30 Standard Edition SpecificationsThe Vivo Y30 Standard Edition was launched quite a while back in 2020 with a 6.51-inch HD+ IPS LCD display powered by the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The device has a dual-camera setup at the rear with a 13MP primary sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies, the Vivo Y30 comes with an 8MP camera sensor at the front. It packs a 5000mAh battery with support for standard 10W charging. So it will take quite some time for your smartphone's big battery to charge completely. The upcoming 5G variant will pack a faster and more powerful chip definitely. It could be one of the Snapdragon 6 series or MediaTek Dimensity series chipsets. More will be known in the coming days. |
| Reliance Jio Offering JioCall to 2G, 3G Users for Making VoLTE Calls Posted: 05 Jul 2022 08:09 PM PDT
Reliance Jio, the largest telecom operator in the country, is offering the JioCall app to consumers on 2G/3G smartphones for making VoLTE calls. Even if your 4G smartphone doesn't support VoLTE (which would be pretty strange in today's world), you can use the JioCall app for making HD calls. JioCall app can be downloaded through the Google Play Store on Android and App Store on iOS. Note that the JioCall app is meant exclusively for the Jio SIM and Jio network users. Let's take a look at the features of the JioCall app. JioCall App FeaturesThe most basic feature of the JioCall app is to enable users to make HD voice and video calls. If users own a JioFi device, they can download the JioCall app on their 2G/3G smartphone and configure the mobile profile. Connecting with the JioFi network, users can make HD voice and video calls from their 2G/3G smartphones. The best thing is that users can just use the phone dialer app to make HD calls. They don't need to go to the JioCall app every time to do that. JioCall app will allow a conference call of up to six participants and a video conference of up to four people, which is decent. The app can support RCS (rich communication services), and because of that, users can do a lot of things. Creating doodles while in the call to express yourself or the location of the party and more is possible in real-time with the JioCall app. JioCall app is not required much on the new generation smartphones as all of them come with support for VoLTE calls. JioCall will only work when the device is connected to the data network of Reliance Jio. That is why the JioFi would help you do that. But if you connect with the data network of Bharti Airtel or Vodafone Idea (Vi), it wouldn't work. |
| Bharti Airtel Quietly Adds Rs 109, Rs 111, Rs 128 and Rs 131 Monthly Packs Posted: 05 Jul 2022 06:33 PM PDT
Bharti Airtel, a major telecom operator in India, has added four new prepaid plans for its users. These plans are meant to give users something affordable to keep their SIM active. Of course, there was the Rs 99 plan already available for the users. But, the Rs 99 plan comes with 28 days of validity only. Users were slightly irritated that they didn't get a super-affordable prepaid plan from Airtel, which comes with 30 days or a one-month service validity. Let's take a look at the newly launched prepaid plans from Bharti Airtel. Bharti Airtel Rs 109 and Rs 111 Prepaid PlanThe reason why I am mentioning these plans together is that they offer the same benefits to the consumers. Both the newly launched Rs 109 and Rs 111 prepaid plan from Airtel offers customers 200MB of data, Rs 99 worth of talktime and SMS at Rs 1 (local) and Rs 1.5 (STD). Calls are charged at 2.5 paise per second. So, what's the difference between the two? It is a minor difference. The Rs 109 plan comes with 30 days of service validity, while the Rs 111 prepaid plan comes with one month of service validity. One month of service validity means that if the user is recharging on May 1, then the next recharge will be due on June 1. If you are wondering, yes, both these plans offer the same benefits as the Rs 99 plan. These plans just add a variety to the validity. Bharti Airtel Rs 128 and Rs 131 Prepaid PlanBharti Airtel has launched two new plan vouchers worth Rs 128 and Rs 131. The Rs 128 plan comes with a service validity of 30 days, while the Rs 131 plan comes for one month. The benefits of both the plans are the same, which are – local and STD calls at 2.5 paise per second, national video calls at 5 paise per second, data at 50 paise/MB, and SMS at Rs 1 (local) and Rs 1.5 (STD). All of these are monthly packs. Technically, only two plans are purely monthly packs, but even the 30 days plans would act as monthly plans for months which have 30 days. |
