Vodafone and Virgin Media O2 to Offer 4G Network Underground

Posted: 08 Jul 2022 10:02 PM PDT

Vodafone

If you are in London and planning to travel through the underground rail system, then you will be happy to know that all the four major telecom operators in the United Kingdom (UK) now offer 4G services underground. Vodafone UK and Virgin Media O2 will share a neutral host mobile network in London's underground rail system to now provide 4G services.

Virgin Media O2 said that it had reached an agreement with BAI Communications that will enable customers to access high-speed 4G and 5G-ready mobile connectivity inside the tunnels built for train commute.

For the unaware, BAI Communications, one of the leading companies and experts in building a shared communications infrastructure, was awarded a 20-year concession by TFL (Transport for London) in June 2021 for delivering mobile connectivity underground.

This will give both Vodafone UK as well as Virgin Media O2 customers the ability to stay connected to the fast-moving world of the internet even inside the Tube. BT-owned EE and CK Hutchison's 3 UK had announced 4G service underground last year.

5G Services Will Also Soon Arrive for London Underground Rail System

One of the biggest benefits of this would be that the 4G networks would also support UK's Emergency Services Network (ESN). London is also a very popular global tourist spot. This will enable the tourists to get a seamless network experience regardless of what they are doing in London.

Note that 5G services aren't switched on for these underground networks right now. But that shouldn't really be an issue right now as for a limited number of people who travel from the train, 4G networks are enough to handle capacity. Regardless, in the coming years, all the telcos will also look to offer 5G network services underground.

The performance of the 4G networks underground is unknown at the current moment. What do you think about fast-mobile networks made for people travelling underground?

BSNL Should Do This to Compete with Airtel, Vi and Jio

Posted: 08 Jul 2022 06:30 PM PDT

BSNL

Every Indian consumer today wants a great mobile networking experience. Rising tariffs have also raised consumer expectations from the telecom operators in the country. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecom operator, is currently working to roll out 4G network. Its competitors – Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio have already prepared for the 5G launch and are just waiting to get spectrum allocation.

BSNL will be the only telco with homegrown 4G network in the country. That would be a serious advantage for the company. To recover from its horrible position, BSNL needs to offer a consistent network experience to consumers with 4G. By the end of 2023, BSNL's 4G networks should have reached most parts of India.

What Should BSNL do to Grow Fast?

If BSNL can add new subscribers consistently on the 4G promise and retain them, its financials will start getting better. BSNL should not be worried about ARPU initially. The telco must be aggressive with its strategies for adding consumers, and one way to do that would be by offering the lowest tariffs, which it already does.

Then, BSNL will have to use its homegrown solutions as a differentiator between its 4G and the 4G that other telcos offer to attract patriots to its network. BSNL can also win over customers by offering a great customer support experience. For most consumers with private telcos, interaction with the customer care team of the company is a very painful experience. If BSNL can solve this issue, it will be a big win for the telco.

BSNL must expand 4G networks as fast as possible without worrying too much about 5G. The work on indigenous 5G equipment can be done by C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) and other Indian enterprises in the background. BSNL's initial focus should be to offer better coverage to the consumers than what they get with the private telcos.

Indian Telecom Sector Monthly Wireless ARPU in 2021 was Rs 108

Posted: 08 Jul 2022 05:05 AM PDT

India

The Indian telecom sector had a robust second half of 2021. There were many relief measures announced which helped the telcos and sector and there was a tariff hike at the end for boosting revenues. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has just released the 'Yearly Performance Indicators Indian Telecom Sector' report (sixth edition for 2021).

As per the report, the monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless (full mobility) services was Rs 108.40. The minutes of usage (MoU) per subscriber per month – Wireless (Full Mobility) service was 834 minutes.

The average revenue for wireless data per data subscribers per month for wireless services was Rs 139.94 and the average revenue realisation per subscriber per GB wireless data during the year was Rs 9.96. TRAI report said that the average wireless data usage per data subscriber per month was 14.04GB.

What's positive for the sector here is that the ARPU per month from wireless services increased to 108.40 in 2021 from Rs 94.87 in 2020. Even the MoU per subscriber per month increased from 759 minutes in 2020 to 834 minutes in 2021.

However, there was a decline in total gross revenue in 2021 as compared to 2020. In 2021, the total gross revenue for the sector stood at Rs 2,68,580 crore in 2021 which was 2.05% down from Rs 2,74,208 crore in 2020.

Total Telecom Subscribers at the End of 2021 as per TRAI Report

The TRAI report suggests that there were a total of 1,178.41 million subscribers (wireless + wireline) at the end of 2021. Out of this, 655.20 million users were urban subscribers and 523.21 million users were rural subscribers. The market share of private operators was 89.41% while the PSU operators held 10.86% of the market.

Out of the total telecom subscribers (1,178.41 million), wireless subscribers were 1,154.62 million and wireline subscribers were 23.79 million. In the wireless segment, there was a growth of 0.07% in terms of the number of subscribers compared to 2020. But in the wireline segment, there was a growth of 18.63% compared to 2020. It is definitely because more and more people are getting fixed-line broadband connections set up at their homes and offices.

The total internet subscribers at the end of 2021 were 829.30 million, which is a positive change of 4.29% over the previous year. Out of these, 802.72 million users were wireless internet subscribers and 26.58 million users were wired internet subscribers.

The number of pay subscribers active with the four DTH (Direct-to-Home) operators of the country was 68.52 million at the end of 2021.

Enea Offering CSPs 5G Service Engine to Seamlessly Serve both 5G and 4G Users

Posted: 08 Jul 2022 03:13 AM PDT

Enea 5G

Enea, a leading supplier of innovative software for telecommunication and cybersecurity, has announced the '5G Service Engine' for the CSPs (Communication Service Providers). Here's what you should know about this.

Enea's 5G Service Engine is made with the vision of offering convenience to the CSPs. While 5G is the next leap, 4G is going to stay relevant in the coming years. It will be years before 5G subscriptions would be more than 4G subscriptions. Thus, telcos can't ignore 4G customers while shifting to 5G and can't ignore 5G by just focusing on 4G.

To help the telcos offer both in a very seamless and convenient manner, Enea has launched the 5G Service Engine (5G-SE). The company, in a release, said that it is a 4G and 5G dual-mode convergent platform for enabling CSPs to launch 5G services and seamlessly transition the existing 4G services.

With the 5G-SE, telcos or CSPs can deploy Gi-LAN and N6 services simultaneously with both 5G Function (UPF) and 4G packet gateway in a multi-vendor cloud-native architecture. This will help the telcos in reducing the costs and complexity which come with managing dual-operations and the 4G/5G transition.

Enea 5G-SE Will Help Reduce Time to Market for Companies Bringing New Products

The 5G-SE from Enea has a very small physical footprint and is easy to deploy. This will lead to a reduction in TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for the telcos and their time to come to market with new services and products.

Dave Bolan, Research Director at Dell'Oro Group, said that Enea's 5G-SE would contribute to simplifying operations for the CSPs and enable the telcos to offer 5G by integrating existing services from the 4G world.

Ericsson, in its latest mobility report, had said that 4G is going to account for major subscriptions for the next few years. This is why the telcos want solutions with which they can conveniently offer both 5G and 4G services to the consumers.

Huawei, Vivo Now Under Strong Scrutiny from Indian Government

Posted: 08 Jul 2022 12:28 AM PDT

Huawei

Huawei and Vivo, both Chinese firms, are under strong scrutiny from the Indian government. Both the companies have been accused of not paying the tax by using unlawful tactics. Vivo India has been accused of remitting Rs 62,746 crore to China. Out of the company's total sales proceeds of Rs 1,25,185 crore, Vivo India has been accused of sending half of it back to mainly China. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said that this move from Vivo India was made to be able to disclose huge losses in Indian incorporated companies to avoid paying taxes within India.

As per ET Telecom, ED has seized over 119 bank accounts of several entities to the tune of Rs 465 crore. The seizure by ED has been made under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

What is Huawei India Doing?

Huawei India has been under the strict eyes of the Income Tax Department. The company is accused of sending large amounts of money to its parent in China in the form of dividends. This helped the company in reducing taxes in India.

Even when the company's revenue was falling, it repatriated Rs 750 crore, said the I-T department. Huawei's bank accounts were frozen by the department in February. There was a very big search on the premises of Huawei as the company was accused of tax evasion.

Huawei has claimed in its petition that it has not done anything wrong, and when its accounts were attached by the I-T department without any notice, its business was affected. The tax department said that Huawei's petition is just a "ploy" for interfering with the departmental proceedings and avoiding paying the taxes.

To date, Huawei has not presented its books of accounts to the income tax department, making it impossible for the department to ascertain the truth in the amount that it had declared as income.

Things such as this would hurt the consumer sentiments towards Chinese companies in general. Especially when a name such as Vivo is accused of evading taxes while earning from India, it would be a huge disappointment for the fans of the company.

This was assumed because of a listing of the device on the TUV certification website. While there's still a listing of the smartphone with 45W fast-charging support, there's no confirmation whether Nothing would bundle that charging brick inside the box. A new listing on the TUV platform shared by Sharma suggests that the smartphone will come with 33W fast-charging support.

Nothing Phone 1 Specifications Which are Confirmed

There are any specifications and details about the smartphone which are already confirmed. First of all, the smartphone is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+. A video shared by Nothing has confirmed that the smartphone will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. The camera details of the smartphone are not out yet, but it is definitely something that the users will be looking forward to.

The smartphone is set to launch on July 12. It could be the start of a new era of cool smartphones in India as well as the global market. The whole weight for Nothing would be on delivering a bug-free experience to the users and promising at least three years of Android updates to get an edge over other smartphone brands. What do you think about Nothing Phone 1?

In order to make users download its mobile app for recharges, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is offering them a little incentive. The telco has displayed on its website that it is offering up to Rs 50 cashback + 30 reward coins if the user downloads and recharges through the Vi app. Today, there are so many third-party mobile applications available for users to make mobile recharges. But Vi wants users to come to its mobile app and do the recharge from there. Note that you can only recharge Vodafone Idea numbers through the Vi app.

Even Jio and Airtel are loading their mobile applications with a ton of different products and services. Airtel, in fact, has a full-fledged banking experience for customers inside the Airtel Thanks app.

All of the telcos are eyeing to earn some extra revenues through the existing customer base, which is measured in millions and millions of customers. In the coming days, all the telcos will be further trying to incentivise customers to use their apps for recharges and more.

This is the only plan from the telco which offers these many additional connections to the users. Let's take a look at the complete benefits offered by Reliance Jio Rs 999 postpaid plan.

Jio Rs 999 Postpaid Plan Complete Benefits

The Rs 999 postpaid plan from Reliance Jio comes with 200GB of data. Post that, for each extra GB of data that the consumer will use, he/she will have to pay Rs 10 for it. So, using 2GB of extra data would mean Rs 20 more on the bill.

Starlink Maritime Giving Up to 350 Mbps Speed on Boats Now

Posted: 07 Jul 2022 06:42 PM PDT

Starlink

Starlink, one of the major satcom (satellite communications) companies globally, is offering satellite broadband connections on boats as well. Starlink Maritime is what the service is called, and the company says that it can offer users high-speed, low-latency internet with up to 350 Mbps speed while at sea.

Starlink said that Starlink Maritime "allows you to connect from the most remote waters across the world, just like you would in the office or at home."

Starlink Maritime sounds like a good solution for the logistics and shipping companies as well as for cruises which find it hard to get a good internet connection on the ship while in the deep waters.

Starlink Maritime is Pretty Tough in Nature

If you have questions about the durability of the Starlink Maritime hardware and connection on a boat, the company has a serious answer for you.
Starlink said that Starlink Maritime could hold up even the rocket landings apart from extreme cold, heat, sleet, heavy rain and gale-force winds.

The company says that a Starlink connection is easy to install on the boat. Starlink Maritime hardware has a very small footprint and requires very less space to be set up and installed. There's a very convenient, small and easy-to-install mount offered with the complete hardware package.

Starlink offers customers the ability to remotely monitor and manage the Starlink fleet from a single portal.

One of the most convenient things about the Starlink Maritime service would be the ability for the customer to pause and un-pause service at any time they want. The company is completely looking after the convenience of the customers and offering them flexibility to use its products. It makes sense as well because there could be a few elongated periods every year where the ship or the boat is just at the dock, and at that time, paying for Starlink Maritime service would not be a very wise thing for the customer.

Telcos in Asia Pacific to Incur 75% of Capex on 5G in the Coming Years

Posted: 07 Jul 2022 03:19 AM PDT

Telcos

The world is moving aggressively towards 5G. Telecom operators globally have been testing and investing in 5G. Several countries have already switched on 5G networks. In the Asia Pacific, telcos are expected to incur $134 billion worth of capex on 5G during 2022-25, of which they will spend 75% on 5G.

Developing Asia Pacific (APAC) regions will be increasing the capex on 5G, while for the developed regions, the capex will go down, said GSMA (via ET Telecom).

5G subscriptions are also going to grow exponentially in APAC in the coming years. By 2025, the GSMA report said that there would be around 400 million 5G subscriptions in the Asia Pacific. Many major countries such as India and Vietnam will switch on their 5G networks in the near future, which will contribute to the total 5G subscription count.

5G Subscriptions in Developed APAC to be Higher

The GSMA report said that 5G subscriptions in the developed APAC regions would be higher than the number in developing regions. This makes sense as the developed regions will have a ready ecosystem and ready consumers.

5G handset sales in countries such as India have grown exponentially. In other Asian countries as well, users are choosing to get a 5G smartphone as their next new device. Users want to invest in a smartphone that is future-ready.

This is going to benefit the telcos in APAC a lot because as soon as they launch 5G services, they will have a ready market to serve. The revenues of the telecom operators are expected to rise to $224 billion in 2025 compared to $210 billion in 2021.

As of April 2022, over 25 telecom operators in 18 countries in the APAC have launched commercial 5G standalone (SA) services. In India, it is highly anticipated that Jio will be the first to do this. 5G SA will give users the true experience of 5G networks.
